Getting Started on SU : First Steps
1. Install the toolbar.
You will get a lot more mileage out of SU if you install the toolbar. There are toolbars for Internet Explorer and Firefox. There is no toolbar for the Opera browser, which I prefer, but there is an add-on script that gives you much of the functionality. But you miss a lot of the SU experience without the toolbar.
Once you have installed the toolbar, you should change your password. You can do this by choosing Tools -> Change Password from the toolbar.

2. Choose an avatar.
You need to have an avatar in order to message other stumblers, post to forums, or really even get visitors to your page. When you visit another stumblers, your avatar appears in their visitors list and if you don't have one, you don't appear so your chances of getting a visit are not good.
You don't have to make it your life's work to choose an avatar. You can change it later. Just find an image you like on the net, right click and save it to your hard drive. Then use the Browse button in the Preferences tab to upload picture. Be sure to click Save Preferences or your avatar will not be saved.
3. Choose some interests.
You can set your interests in Preferences on the Interests tab. If you choose X-rated interests, people who filter X will never see you. (This is also true if your avatar is too out there.) Many people surf at work and will have filters in place so bear that in mind.

4. Decide how public or private you want your blog.
If you want to keep your blog private, choose Don't Show Any Favorites on the Personal Information tab in Preferences.
Visitors to your page will probably not friend you because they won't know anything about you.
My preferences are set to Show only non-adult favorites. I don't intentionally have adult favorites, but sometimes pages are mis-tagged (tag discussion comes later), and I don't want to unintentionally offend anyone.
I may want to offend others. But when I do, it will be intentional.
