He who has lost his soul will be finding God anywhere, up above and down below, in here and out there, he will cling to every straw of love blown past his doorway as he stands waiting for a sign. ~James Hillman

      Making Friends

      "Will you be my friend?"

This is such a touching thing to say. Every time I see it in message, especially when it's a new person, I hate having to say "no". I say "no" because you only get a certain number of friends and because "friend" on SU really means "you like what the person puts on their pages."

Because you get only a limited number of friends, I cannot add as a friend everyone who asks me. I will make a place for you in my friends list if you have content of interest to me on your pages. But this will require that I remove someone else, and I try to avoid doing that for a host of reasons.

      More About Friends

Although I am a somewhat introverted person, I have made several warm friends here.

First, SU is a social bookmarking site, not a social networking site. This can give the appearance of not being as friendly or welcoming a community, but that isn't the case. It is just that the way you get to know someone here is different.

You only get so many friend slots. If I have friended someone (become their fan), it means:
      - I read your Profile.
      - I took the time to read several if not all of their SU pages.
      - I want to hear what they have to say.

If they friend me back, we become mutuals and can send each other stumbles. We may become friends in the traditional sense over time.

Second, the fact that friends is an overloaded term, can make it difficult to "unfriend" someone here. My friends list is full of people whose pages are no longer of interest to me, but I am unwilling to unsubscribe from their pages (unfriend) for fear of hurting their feelings. So do not assume that the fact you are in my friends list means either that I like you or your pages. I may. But I may have moved on to a new set of interests and I am just a coward.

Third, if someone friends me (a fan), I will try to visit your pages, if I am awake, if I see you in my visitors list, and if I have time right then. Even if I am unable or unwilling to friend you, I will always thumbs up your page unless:

      - you have no visible content on your page, meaning you have not thumbs upped many pages or you have set your preferences to show pages only to friends

Why would I friend you if I haven't seen your pages?

      - you are a "pretty girl collector"

If every avatar on your friends list is a pretty girl, it is unlikely that you are here "just for the articles".

      - you are only here to promote an external website and you do not contribute to this community

Unlike many people here, I do not mind if you promote a website on your blog. On the contrary, I like the idea of being about to shop at the corner market in the global community and not be limited to the Google Top 10. But if you do not review pages or contribute to the community, you are stealing time from people here and giving nothing back.

If you send me a page in message and ask me to review it, it had better be good. If it contentless and full of pop-ups, you'll get your review but I guarantee you won't like it.

I will thumbs you down if:

      - your entire page is full of thumbs down reviews with hateful or violent remarks. You are welcome to say anything you like within the acceptable use policy, but I don't have to recommend it.

      - your entire page is full of links to a single website or it looks to me like you are being paid to promote websites on SU.

I will thumbs you down, write you a bad review, and report you as a spammer if:

      - you promote your own website in reviews of other pages.

      - all or nearly all of your reviews are of the same website, indicating you are here to trash the database and steal time from people.
