Safety First
SU is an online community and just like real life, there are some routine cautions you should take. Here are four things to do to keep yourself safe:
1. Change your password immediately. Install the toolbar and then choose Tools -> Change Password from the SU toolbar. Make it at least eight characters and try to include numbers. Avoid using dictionary words. Here is an example of a strong password: xin3.Ann (8 characters, contains at least one upper case character, one number, and one punctuation character). No this is not my password.
2. Ignore requests for personal information. There is no reason a stranger need to know what you look like, where you live, what you do for a living, your email address, your phone number, where you work, your family situation. You get the idea. Just answer the parts of the message that you want to answer.
When I was first here, I shared information about my relationships and feelings with what seemed a very kind and caring woman. Imagine my surprise when I received that information in an email from someone I did not know well who made it his mission to "warn" people about her. Did I ever tell you about the time I let a junkie borrow my rent money for the afternoon? Okay, let's not go there.
3. Set up a special email account at gmail or someplace similar just for SU. Have that email account forward to your real email address. That way if you do decide to email or chat with someone here, you are not giving them information that can be used to track you.
4. "Friend" on SU really means "subscriber". Look at someone's pages carefully before you friend them. Friends can send you "stumbles" (pages they find) and can spam you from now to forever with that. Also, just because someone asks you to be "friends" doesn't mean you should. If you look at a page and there is very little content and all the person's "friends" are pretty girls, you need to question their reason for being here. There are no small number of "pretty girl" collectors and their pages and communications are rarely exciting. The first time someone stumbles you a picture of a penis coming out of their forehead and you haven't had coffee yet, you'll see the wisdom of this.
